Secure Email Services is a new security feature provided to users of the Project 42 Email System. You are a user of the Project 42 Email System if your Email account ends in esu10.org, esu11.org, esu15.org, esu16.org, or panesu.org.
What are Secure Email Services you ask? Secure Email Services, first and formost, consist of the encryption of your email account password and email transmissions over any Internet connection. If you currently use an Email program such as Outlook, Outlook Express, OS X Mail, Eudora, or Thunderbird (and many more) to access your email account on the Project 42 Email System, then your account and Email transmissions could be exposed to malicious eavesdroppers who may want such information. With the use of Secure Email Services and encryption, your email transmissions and account information are "scrambled" during transmittal over the unsavory Internet so that you can be sure your Email account information is not stolen.
From our position as administrators of the Project 42 Email System, we will also sleep better (at night) knowing our users' accounts are safe and sound. We STRONGLY urge all users of the Project 42 Email system to enable this service within their Email programs.
For mobile laptop users there is also an added benefit in using Secure Email Services. If you have ever taken a laptop home our outside of Project 42 networks you may have come across the painful problem of not being able to send Email through the Project 42 Email servers. Due to a feature called SMTP-AUTH, mobile users of Secure Email Services will no longer experience the woes of sending Email on untrusted networks. Furthermore, in the fall of 2008, it will be required that ALL mobile users sending email from outside of Project 42 school networks use the secure email settings.
After the initial setup on your computer, Secure Email Services is maintenance free and you will be able to continue using your Email just as you always have.
